Accused of constitutional coup
However, Russia's opposition leaders have alleged that new amendments are being made so that Putin can remain in power until 2036. According to reports, the opposition has called it a 'constitutional coup'. On the other hand, the Russian government claimed that there was a need to strengthen the role of Parliament and to enhance social policy and public administration. If the constitutional change is approved by the Parliament and the Constitutional Court, then Putin's tenure as president will be reduced to zero. In this way, he will be able to become president again.
Putin first became president in 2000
During Medvedev's presidency, the president's term was reduced to 6 years. Putin first became president on 7 May 2000. His last term was completed in 2008. Medvedev was then elected President and Putin became Prime Minister. However, the real command of the government was in Putin's hands. In 2012, Putin became president once again and Medvedev was elected prime minister. He has 20 years as President on 7 May 2020. During this time many changes were seen in the country. He worked abroad for 15 years as a spy of Russia's intelligence agency KGB. When former President of Russia Boris Yeltsin abruptly resigned in 1999, Putin was the Prime Minister of the country. He was nominated as acting president amid the pending elections at the time.

On 26 March 2000, Putin won his first presidential election with a slight margin. But the sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk in the Barents Sea saw a shock to his image within a few months. 118 members of the submarine were killed.
